Something happened to movies just after the turn of the 21st century. To be considered successful, every movie has to be a blockbuster and spawn a dozen sequels; that means that the dramatic stakes of every movie have to be turned up to eleven. No longer can a hero foil a bank heist or just help somebody; now, the fate of the whole universe has to be at stake. Enter The LEGO Movie, an unassuming animated gem that’s willing to play around with and remix (or even satire) that idea: what if there’s been a mistake? What if the main character isn’t really the Hero Of Prophecy, fated to defeat the Great Evil and rescue everything? What if the stakes are smaller, like helping your friends or learning to value your loved ones? Also what if we put some great cameos and songs in it, and animated it in a really eye-catching way? Sounds pretty good, right? Good news: it’s awesome.
