2024 Guide to Free Museum Days Around the Tampa Bay Area

When it comes to family outings around Tampa Bay, try adding free museums to the mix. Everyday in the Tampa Bay Area you can visit a museum for FREE! Museums can be an a fun and affordable way to get your family involved in history and you may even find yourself having some fun. Some museums can be pretty interactive as well.

If you currently have a museum membership, make sure to check if it has reciprocal membership for even more savings! Come explore these daily ways to enjoy museums around the Tampa Bay Area. While some of these museums only offer free admission for specific days, others are free to attend any time you visit, but in either case, always call or check their website to confirm hours and fees as they are subject to change without notice.


Free Daily Museum Admission

 

The Florida Botanical Gardens

12520 Ulmerton Rd, Largo, FL 33774

Your family is going to love this beautiful oasis tucked in Largo, Florida.  Follow the walking paths as they showcase the beautiful fauna and other natural resources in this serene atmosphere. The gardens are great for the young and the young at heart.

Admission to the gardens is free daily, 7 a.m.- 5 p.m.. Donations are accepted.

Throughout the Botanical Gardens you will find several different gardens including an herb garden, fruit, vegetable, native plants garden and more!

Let the kids explore the Butterfly Garden located in front of the Welcome Center. Take a seat on the Butterfly Chair and see the mosaic stepping stones while the butterflies flutter nearby.

As you stroll through the gardens, there are many places where you will see all types of art…

  • Mural near the Tropical Fruit Garden
  • Sculpture in the pond

  • Musical instruments

There are paved paths that run throughout the gardens and a boardwalk. There are three bridges that connect the gardens. The north bridge connects to the Tropical Fruit area & Children’s Trail, the center bridge is the main bridge into the gardens and the south bridge connects to Heritage Village.

 

 

 

 

Seaside Seabird Sanctuary

While you’re near Indian Rocks Beach, stop by Seaside Seabird Sanctuary for free admission to their outdoor bird sanctuary. Donations are accepted.

Children will love seeing the huge variety of birds. With nearly 100 birds on display like Gulls, Blue Jays, Owls, Macaws and more, this is a great attraction for bird lovers.

They have a daily pelican hand-feeding presentation, an observation tower you can explore, “Reading with Rufous” Storytime event with resident Eastern Screech Owl, and other kids activities throughout the month.

Libraries (Daily):

Hillsborough County Library’s Discovery Pass

It provides one-time admission or tour to a local Tampa attraction during a 7-day checkout period. Your checkout receipt serves as your admission or tour pass to the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts and others as they become available. Passes may be reserved through the Hillsborough County library branch. Discovery Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pasco County Library Discovery Pass

Enjoy free access to museums and attractions from Pasco County Library System by using the Discovery Pass. Passes can be used at Glazer Children’s Museum in Tampa, Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg and others.

  • Reserve your Discovery passes through the library’s catalog system.
  • Discovery passes are available on a first-come/first-served basis with hold priority.
  • Checkout up to 1 pass per museum to a verified Pasco resident card.
  • When your pass is available, pick up at any library location within 8 business days.
  • Your checkout receipt serves as your admission ticket.
  • Admission is good for 7 days from checkout and one-time use only.
  • There is no need to return receipt to the library.
  • Check with each individual museum for open hours, holiday closures, and admission details.
  • Blackout dates and restrictions may apply.

Pinellas County Library Card Pass

Enjoy free access to several museums with the library’s Museum Pass and visit museums like the Great Explorations, the Florida Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and more. 

Library cardholders are able to borrow a free family pass to these institutions for seven days. Each branch only has two passes for each museum, so they’re on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Florida Children’s Museum- Lakeland Culture Pass

In collaboration with the City of Lakeland, freed admission is offered to Florida Children’s Museum through their  Culture Pass for up to 5 people for 1 day. The Culture Pass can be checked out at one of the three Lakeland Library branches. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The children’s museum is located at Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland. Through cultural exhibits, educational programs and events in the arts and sciences, they provide children and families with fun, hands-on learning opportunities to inspire and equip the next generation with confidence, creativity, and a love of learning. You can find out more about the museum by visiting the Florida Children’s Museum website.

Monday- Free Museum Admission

The John and Mable Ringing Museum

5401 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota, FL 34243

The Ringling Museum is located in Sarasota, Florida, and preserves the legacy and estate of John and Mable Ringling. John Ringling was one of five brothers who owned and operated the circus called  “The Greatest Show on Earth.

The museum is home to more than 28,000 art pieces, including memorabilia from the circus. It is home to the State Art Museum of Florida, the historic Ca’ d’Zan Mansion, Bayfront Gardens, an Art Library, the Circus Museums, and the Historic Asolo Theater.  

 It’s definitely one to add to your bucket list if you’re going to be staying in the Tampa Bay Area for any amount of time. The grounds are beautiful and the artwork and different artifacts there will put you in a happy place.

Museum Details: Every Monday the Museum of Art, including special exhibition galleries is free to the public. Regular admission pricing applies if you wish to visit the Circus Museum or Ca’d’Zan. There is a playground on-site and picnic tables so you can bring your own lunch. Located on

Tampa Police Museum

The Tampa Museum in Tampa, FL. celebrates the rich history of the Tampa Police department. The museum is located on the ground floor of the Tampa Police Department headquarters building in downtown Tampa. The museum is filled with police uniforms, badges, helmets, hats, original mug shots and fingerprint cards of famous criminals, and many other police memorabilia. Make sure to take a photo behind the bars in the museum.

Glazer Children’s Museum

Probably one of the most popular Tampa Bay attraction for kids. Located in downtown Tampa the museum offers a great interactive style to keep children learning and having fun. Their calendar is packed with fun activities, camps, etc.

Museum Admission Details: Every first Tuesday of the month. The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County proudly presents Free Tuesdays, held on the first Tuesday of every month, with Free Museum admission for the whole family from 9:30am-5pm.

 

 

The Woodson African American Museum of Florida

Visit between Tuesday – Thursday from 12-5 P.M. and Friday from 11 A.M. – 4 P.M. Free admission. 

 

Come learn about the Father of Black History Month, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and the history of African Americans in the St. Petersburg region. The museum serves to preserve and celebrate this rich history by sharing it with all guests of the St. Petersburg area.

Exhibits change so make sure to come back again and again. You can also check out their Black History Matter street mural in front of the museum.

Tampa Firefighters Museum

The Tampa Firefighters Museum is housed in the first Tampa Firefighter Department building. Telling a unique history as a former fire station with exhibits on local service history, firefighting memorabilia & vehicles. The museum also includes a hands-on, interactive, fire safety and emergency awareness classroom.

Here since 1911, we offer the perfect historical experience for all. There is no admission charge but donations are greatly appreciated.

Museum Admission Details: The Tampa Firefighters Museum is open by appointment only Wednesday-Friday (10am-2pm). Free admission, donations are appreciated. 

 

 

Heritage Village

Tampa Museum of Art

You can’t miss stoping by this modern building in downtown Tampa. The Tampa Museum of Art is filled with amazing art pieces and sculptures. In addition to docent-led tours, they offer art classes, family events, free family events, and more.

Museum Admission Details: The Tampa Museum of Art invites everyone to Art on the House every Thursday evening from 4 – 8 pm for Pay-as-you-will admission. You may decide to pay nothing or you may decide to pay any amount of money for admission. You get to choose!
There is a cafe in the museum.

They are also located near the Glazer Children’s Museum and the Curtis Hixon Park, where there is a splash area and playground for children. Located on 2.

Palm Harbor Museum

The early settlers of Palm Harbor have stories to share, and you can live them at the Palm Harbor Museum. Held in the Hartley family home built between 1914 and 1919, guests experience the history of fishing, orange farming, and railroads in the Palm Harbor area.

Gulf Beaches Historical Museum

While you’re at Pass-a-Grille Beach, make sure to take a moment and visit the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum and it’s free admission for everyone. 

Housed in what was the first church in Pass-a-Grille, built in 1917, the museum collection highlights from life as it was in the early development of the South Pinellas beach communities with it’s ongoing exhibits.

Come visit this unique museum and learn the legacy of the island’s colorful heritage. View postcards from years past, hundreds of photos showing the growth progression of the beach communities, memorabilia of two island schools, church artifacts, and much more.

Museum Admission Details: Though they have limited hours of operation due to volunteer availability, everyone is invited to come visit Friday -Saturday from 10am-4pm and Sunday 1-4pm.

Zephyrhills Museum of Military History

Check out the vintage aircraft they have on-site.  If your family are military enthusiasts, you’ll love to visit and learn firsthand from veterans about WWII, Korean War & Vietnam War. The veterans who volunteer are very knowledgeable and you’ll find some unique memorabilia. They also host monthly events with reenactments. Make sure to visit their website for the latest event.

Henry B. Plant Museum

401 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa, FL 33606

Located on the University of Tampa campus, the Museum is housed in the 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, the Victorian-styled railroad resort is now a National Historic Landmark. The museum contains the actual furnishings enjoyed by the first guests to visit the hotel.

On the second Saturday of each month from January through November, the Henry Plant Museum is open free of charge to all visitors. Guests can explore the former Tampa Bay Hotel, view our permanent collection, and learn more about lifestyles from 130 years ago.

Live concerts were the most popular daily entertainment at the Tampa Bay Hotel, make sure to participate in the authentic tradition with live classical music at 2 pm. This is a great place to take pictures. The museum looks like a beautiful castle near the water. There is a nearby Curtis Dixon park for little children to play on to extend the fun for your day.

Museum Admission Details: Visit on the second Saturday of each month from January through November, the Henry Plant Museum is open free of charge to all visitors from 10am-5pm.

Manatee Viewing Center

One of Florida’s natural wonders is located in Apollo Beach, FL. The Manatee Viewing Center is a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary that provides critical protection from the cold for these unique, gentle animals. You will see a lot of them. Make sure to step inside of their mini-museum to learn more about the manatees and the Florida landscape. 

Details: The Viewing Center is open from Nov. 1st through April 15th of every year from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily. Admission and parking is always free. They are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve (at 3 p.m.), Christmas Day and Easter.

Indian Rocks Historical Museum (Seasonal only)

Before heading over to take a dip at Indian Rocks Beach, stop by the Indian Rocks Historical Museum.

Hours: Open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Closed July, August and September

The museum focuses on the rich and storied history of Indian Rocks, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, and part of Largo. Photos, postcards, artifacts, and maps tell the story of Indian Rocks to guests.

Your family can even “Walk Indian Rocks Beach” for a free self-guided audio app tour designed to be downloaded to a smartphone or tablet.

 

 

Blue Star Museums

To help honor military families, Blue Star Museums in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America is offering free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day of every year.

The 2024 Blue Star Museums program begins on Armed Forces Day, and ends on Labor Day.

Museum Day Live

Museum Day is a one-day event in which participating museums and cultural institutions across the United States provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Participants are allowed to download one ticket per email address through the Smithsonian’s Museum Day Live website. The ticket provides free general admission for up to two people on a specified Saturday in September.

 Arts Alive

September is Art month in St. Petersburg, FL. As part of the St. Petersburg Festival of the Arts, the city celebrates by offering a free museum day, which is usually on a Saturday in September.
